Yosemite National Park
October 2-4, 2020 — On our Events Calendar this year, we have a trip to Yosemite National Park scheduled for October 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, that is a 3 day, 2 night event. Our plan is to stay in Oakhurst, CA, which is just outside the South Entrance to the Park. Vance Hughey and Jon Greene have already booked their reservations at the Best Western Plus Yosemite Gateway Inn (for reservations phone (855) 564-2515 - to call the hotel directly, phone (559) 683-2378). Below is a link to the Trivago Hotels website that has the Best Western Plus-Gateway Inn listed as their first choice.
We plan to meet at the SaveMart parking lot on North Carson Street in Carson City at 9:45 AM and leave by 10:00AM on Friday, October 2, 2020. Unless weather or other conditions dictate otherwise, we will head south on Highway 395 to Lee Vining where we will stop for lunch before heading over Tioga Pass and into the park. We will travel through Tuolomne Meadows and Yosemite Valley on our way to our lodging facilities in Oakhurst. Arrangements for dinner are still being worked on.
After breakfast on Saturday morning, we will reenter the park and enjoy the fantastic scenery nature has provided for us. We expect dinner to be in Oakhurst again, but we are still looking into dining options.
On Sunday, our plan was to try to do the tour of the Big Trees at the Mariposa Grove, just inside the South Entrance, before we left for home. However, the Grove is currently closed and we will have to consider an alternative diversion.
If weather or other conditions preclude taking Tioga Pass, we will instead head over the Sierras probably via Highway 88 and plan to have lunch in Jackson. This route will take us around Yosemite and directly to Oakhurst. In that case, we will not see Yosemite until the next day. Last we checked smoke from regional wildfires is causing poor air quality in Yosemite. We hope that changes before we venture down there. As usual, we will be subject to what is happening in California with any COVID restrictions that may be in place at the time.
Unfortunately, Rod will not be able to attend this event because he and Doris will be in Houston, TX attending the wedding of their last nephew of their kid's generation to get married. He will still be intimately involved with the planning and the communication as we get closer to the actual event, so please keep him posted.
