In Memoriam

Linda Jean Kelly

? - January 17, 2020

We are sad to report the passing of Linda Kelly. She had been an active member of the Sierra Nevada Mini Coopers club since January 2015. Members may recall in particular the poker run that Linda planned for us in August 2016. She had us making stops in Genoa, Smith Valley, Bridgeport, Walker, and Topaz to collect our poker hands. She also participated with us in the Nevada Day Parade, our turkey collection for charity at Mike's Pharmacy, and many other events. She was a very special person, and her SNMC family misses her. RIP, Linda.

Following is her obituary, which was published by The Reno Gazette Journal and Lyon County News Leader from January 23 to January 26, 2020:

Linda Jean Kelly passed away on January 17, 2020. She was born in Royal Oak, MI. Her family moved to southern California during her teen years, where she graduated from high school. Linda loved music, she played the guitar and ukulele, and sang in the church choir. So it was only fitting that her first full-time adult job would be working at Capitol Records. Her bosses kept her under their wing and looked out for her, and she met many of the successful artists in the 70s. Most people with Linda's love of music would have stayed and made a career, but Linda discovered a greater love, even, than music. The outdoors. She wanted to share her love of the outdoors with others, and be involved in preserving and protecting it. Linda left Capitol records to go to college, first for a bachelor's degree, and later a master's degree that would open the door to working for the Nation Park Service. She spent time working at Bryce Canyon, UT, Grand Canyon, AZ, Lake Mead, NV, Channel Islands, CA, eventually ending up with the Bureau of Land Management in Reno, NV where she oversaw use of public lands with an eye toward managing the use of the land while enforcing policy intended to protect the environment for future generations. Linda's interests in the environment and local history led to an in-depth knowledge of Northern Nevada's history and geography. Linda had a special gift for sharing her knowledge with others. When giving educational presentations on the land, she had a gleam in eye and a smile on her face that showed everyone her love and enthusiasm for the subject. One of her special gifts to those around her was how she engaged with everyone. You knew that she wanted to hear from you, your likes, those things and people important in your life, and she would return and give you surprises now and then to help celebrate the things most important to you.

In 2008, Linda was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and was told to expect 5 years. Linda looked cancer in the eye, and said "I'm not done yet". The five year anniversary came and went. And then the 10 year came and went. Linda had passion for life and fully used the limited time she knew she had. There were cruises, trips, she did Ride the Rockies (a grueling 7-day bike ride through Colorado, up and down mountain ranges). She shared the magic of her experiences with fellow cyclists, who because of her enthusiasm, decided they wanted to ride it too. So she went back with them and did it again. She completed century bike rides, the Death Ride, participated in the 178 mile Reno-Tahoe odyssey, all during or between chemo-therapy treatments. There were also outings with the Sierra Nevada Mini Coopers, holiday gatherings, book clubs, bar-b-ques, local bike club rides, lunches, with her circle of friends. She truly used the time she was given well. She was an inspiration to those around her for living life to the fullest.

Linda is survived by Jack Janney, Reno, NV, her sisters, Joy Lagomarsino, Ventura, CA, Sandi Kelly, Ventura, CA, her brother Bob Kelly, Santa Barbara, CA., as well as 3 nieces (Briana, Casey, Melody), 1 nephew (Jake), and 1 great niece (Josie) and 3 great nephews (Jack, Bennett, Greyson).

George S Skibinski

August 7, 1931 - April 23, 2020

George S Skibinski, a Dayton resident, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2020, at the age of 88. George was born in Newark, NJ on August 7, 1931 to Sophie (Dral) Skibinski and George J Skibinski. He grew up in New Jersey surrounded by his family that included his parents, brother Bob, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins that contributed to many fond memories.

George served in the U S Navy from 1951 to 1955 as an Aviation Structural Mechanic where he was stationed in many locations in the United States. However, his most favorite was when he was stationed in the Alameda and Oakland area of California. He had many stories of his time there especially the ones that involved his lifelong friend Daniel Mathews.

George married the love of his life Dorothy on June 27, 1959 in New Jersey. They were married for 44 wonderful years. They made the big move to California in 1963 along with their daughter Donna.

George worked at Litton Industries and Hughes Aircraft in Southern California as a production control specialist until his retirement.

George loved spending time and traveling with his family and friends. For those of you knew him well he would never pass up an invitation to share a meal, visit or lend a helping hand to his family and friends.

This last September, George, Donna and Brad made a trip to PA and NJ to visit family. We will have many happy memories of the time spent with our family during this visit.

George is survived by his daughter Donna (Brad) Winter in Dayton, granddaughter Ashley (Bryan) Anders in Reno, brother Bob (Eileen) Skibinski in Norristown PA, sister in law Florence Oliphant In Corvallis, OR and numerous nephews and nieces.

In his honor if you would like to share a meal, visit or extend a kind gesture with someone, George would like that.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St Ann’s Catholic Church or Dayton Senior Center.

We recently lost a special member of our car club. George attended many of our events with his daughter Donna Winter and her husband Brad. George always had a story to share and made everyone he came in contact with feel like an old friend. We will miss his presence and we offer our deepest condolences to the family he leaves behind.

Glenn A. Weaver

March 6, 1949 - July 2, 2013

Members of SNMC were saddened to hear of the passing of Glenn Weaver.  Glenn was a long time member who had supported the Disabled American Veterans on some of our early Poker runs.  He was an active member of SNMC and was instrumental in helping get SNMC on the road in the early years of the club.

Glenn was the proud owner of two Mini Coopers, one of which is pictured below. One of his Minis had the John Cooper Works performance package on it that he won as a grand prize at the "A Mini Vacation in Vegas" (AMVIV) several years ago. At the time of his death, Glenn was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Carson City and lived in Meyers, California, near Lake Tahoe.

Glenn passed away quite unexpectedly at his home of pneumonia on

July 2, 2013.

Rest in Peace, Glenn . . . we know that you Enjoyed the Drive.
